Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie On African Women and Marriage

adichieThe institution of marriage has been a topic that has created different stories, theories and even anticipation which has endangered many men and women in Africa to forge ahead with partners which in most cases have been approved by their parents, friends, siblings and not just them.

The idea, which originates from the bible in Genesis 2: 18 “The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him” has undoubtedly been misinterpreted in many societies in Africa where women feel the need to be married or be classified as useless in the society.

Speaking at the RAS (Royal African Society), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, said “Africans must speak for themselves… especially women”.” She said, “We should not be raising our daughters to aspire to marriage,” Adichie urged people to “make space” in society for women who do not wish to get married. Speaking vividly that, “We need to teach our girls to conquer the world [instead]. She concluded that she has hoped and hopes that history would remember that African women could love and be loved..”  Her pain for the speech began when a reporter told her that, “Feminists are unhappy women who cannot find a husband”. No one can doubt her feminism but was Adichie saying marriage is bad? NO.  She just insisted, that “The [African] woman is more than merely an object but [an individual] with her own desires”.

However you think of it, Adichie was not wrong, the African society has made women believe that if marriage does not occur when they are alive, it is a curse or an omen which has taken away joy when in fact marriage isn’t a wedding ceremony that occurs for only a day. Marriage is a beautiful union, same thing with love and women play a vital role for “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favour from the LORD” proverbs 18:22- not he who finds a husband. I never said men were not favoured oh! #lol

African women should understand Adichie and see the need to accomplish goals and become undefeatable in school, at work and in marriage. We are the salt of the society, the breaking point of a man and the last best gift to the world.
